An example of such a boot is illustrated on the right. The picture is taken under the engine of a typical front-wheel drive car. The boot turns at the speed of the car's drive shaft and is subjected to all the flexing and turning movements of the road wheel. The boot is exposed to dirt and water splashed up from the road by the tire, and to various fluids present in the engine compartment. It protects the constant velocity joint from dirt and maintains a layer of lubricating grease around the moving metal parts. Loss of this grease or dirt getting into the joint would soon cause a catastrophic failure. These requirements can be met by the use of a high quality Baypren® compound.

Compound Design
The product is based on Baypren® 126, a chloroprene rubber with high strength and tear resistance. It is resistant to weathering and typical lubricating greases. The compound contains three process oils to help maintain a balance between fatigue resistance, resistance to aging and flexibility at extremely low temperatures. The combination of Vulkanox® 3100 and microcrystalline wax (Antilux® 110) is used to give long term protection against ozone cracking.Rhenofit® DDA 70 offers protection against oxygen and heat aging.
The vulcanization system employs Zinkoxyd aktiv®, Rhenogran® ETU 80 and Vulkacit® Thiuram for rapid safe cure in injection or compression molding. Important properties are tear strength, ultimate elongation and resistance to fatigue-induced cracking.
