Polyamide for coolant pipes made by GIT / WIT materials

Automotive coolant pipes have to meet tough requirements:

The coolant is passing through them under pressure and high temperature, whereas the water-glycol-mixture is a corrosive medium for many materials. Due to the flow resistance inside respectively the required tightness outside the surface must be as even as possible.

Because of those requirements LANXESS has e.g. developed the following Polyamide 66 grades:

Durethan DPAKV30XHREFPA 66 GF30hydrolysis resistant, easy flowing, improved inner + outer surface quality
Durethan AKV30GHR DUS023PA 66 GF30hydrolysis resistant, easy flowing, improved outer surface quality

They can be characterized by:

  • High resistance against coolant even at elevated temperatures
  • Good processability in GIT / WIT providing good inner and outer surface qualities

Limiting factors

Under certain conditions the use of GIT / WIT for coolant pipes is problematic:

  • Large cross sections (approx. 70 mm) result in big wall thicknesses, which promote defects such as shrink holes.
  • Especially the WIT process requires tailored materials (see „materials“), standard materials cause unacceptable surfaces and push-out behavior.
